Major Case Squad activated in Cahokia murder

Officials said at a press conference this afternoon that the victim has been identified as Kenneth Chaney, 44. They provided no additional details.

CAHOKIA -- A man was shot to death early today while sitting in his girlfriend's car in an unincorporated area of Cahokia, police say.

An East St. Louis man in his 40s was shot several times about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday. The Major Case Squad has been called in to investigate.

The victim's name has not yet been released.

The man was killed in the car parked on Violet Drive, in the Parkfield Terrace subdivision

Drive-by shooter kills man near Cahokia

An East St. Louis man sitting in his car outside his girlfriend's house was killed early Tuesday by a drive-by shooter near Cahokia.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis has been activated to investigate.

The victim was in his 40s and sitting in his car on Violet Drive, which is in the Parkfield Terrace subdivision between Cahokia and Centreville. He had yet to be identified because relatives were being notified, said St. Clair County Sheriff's Department Capt. Steve Johnson.

The man was sitting in his car outside his girlfriend's house about 4 a.m. Tuesday when another car passed and several shots were fired into his car. Deputies initially responded but then the Major Case Squad was brought in, said its commander, Sgt. Michael Hundelt.

Police did not immediately have any suspects or motive. The Major Case Squad is seeking the public's help and can be reached at (618) 825-5200. Tips can be made anonymously, with a potential reward of up to $1,000, by calling CrimeStoppers at (866) 371-8477.
